See us Sunday at Novo Asian Food Hall

This Sunday, February 2, we'll be busy!

In the morning we start our new 4-week beginner class at our studio in Bellevue. (The class is currently full, but if you join the waitlist we'll let you know if a space opens up.)

Then we pack up our gear and head over to the Strip District to help our friends at Novo Asian Food Hall celebrate the Lunar New Year. We'll be performing - indoors this time - between 3:30 and 4. Check their Instagram account for the full entertainment schedule, vendors, activities, and more.

Speaking of Lunar New Year...

Did you know that Japan is one of the few Asian countries that celebrates the new year on January 1 instead of according to the lunar calendar?

During the Meiji Restoration period in Japanese history (late 19th century), the country rapidly modernized and westernized as they reestablished trade relations with Europe and the United States. Part of this was adopting the standard Gregorian calendar and moving New Year celebrations to December 31-January 1.

Despite having a different date, New Year is still a very important holiday and time for celebration in Japan. This Wikipedia article gives a good overview of some of the traditions and ways to celebrate.

Pittsburgh Taiko is always happy to join in celebrating the Lunar New Year along with our friends and neighbors.
